ECTARC Short Street Education and Care Service

ECTARC Short Street Education and Care Service

ECTARC Short Street is 28 place occasional care service offering education and care to a diverse community. We are located approximately 10mins north of the Wollongong CBD in Corrimal. Located within the community precinct, we are surrounded by ample free parking and close to several community facilities including, Corrimal District Library and Community Centre.

Children are provided with opportunities to be actively involved in decision making, skill building, play and experimentation in a safe environment with an emphasis on play-based learning.  Educators use “Circle of Security” practices to ensure children feel safe, supported and protected while also employing principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which states that all children have the right to an education that lays a foundation for the rest of their lives, maximises their ability, and respects their family, cultural and other identities and languages.

The development of genuine, caring, sharing and understanding relationships form the basis of all learning, discovery and future growth.  Our educators come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and are highly trained and committed to developing inclusive, trusted, nurturing and caring relationships which cater for individual needs while ensuring children are co-facilitators of their own learning.

Families are invited to attend the many events held within the service as well as visit whenever they wish to share and delight in the varied gardening, sporting, music and movement activities, reading of stories and singing of songs in a variety of home languages.

We use our large, leafy, green outdoor garden and play area to offer a variety of gardening projects, focusing on lessening our carbon footprint while leading to a sustainable future.  Children and families can be involved in community gardening projects, care for our native bees and watch for blue tongue lizards. Tiny hands and feet can wiggle in delight in the trickle of water in the creek bed, get excited by the discovery of tadpoles and say “hello” to the many friendly native birds who stop by most days.  This area also provides a wonderful place for families to sit and talk with educators or just enjoy watching the children.

Indoors we have two learning rooms filled with natural light providing a home like environment for children to grow and learn.  Our large early learning room (birth – 3 years) has high ceilings and two cot rooms for babies to rest and sleep peacefully. Our preschool room (3 – 5 years) offers a fun and educational environment opening onto our large outdoor area enabling the children to freely move between the two spaces.

The local community provides an extension to our learning environment, we take the children on walking excursions to Corrimal Library for the ‘100 Stories Before School’ program.  Children also visit our aged and vision impaired elderly community members who meet at the Community Centre and undertake transition to school visits with nearby primary schools. These activities provide children with opportunities to develop a sense of caring for others while developing an awareness of community and belonging.

Our service is committed to ongoing self-assessment against the National Quality Standards to drive continuous improvement and improve the developmental and educational outcomes for young children. ECTARC Short Street is awaiting Assessment and Rating against the National Quality Standards.
